Why stop at 128 voice polyphony?

An MPC 5000 and either one of these:

or

Polyphony, keygroups, memory, LFOs..galore. Sound design at it's best....that is why these MPCs have all those MIDI outs.

The 4000 will probably go in the end. Although I don't like the idea to let go the 24 bit sampler, the 5k wins on all other territories for me.
Of course, the fact that I am testing it, forces me to know/investigate every feature and parameter, which makes me feel very much at home on the 5000 by now.

As beta tester for AKAI I don't think anyone expects you to rank the 4000 over 5000. That's not blast and I actually appreciate you posting your experience with the 5000 . However, anyone that gets a free machine before release has an unwritten obligation the manufacturer. That's just real ,not a blast.

You are really mistaken here. Betatesting for Akai doesn't mean I can't have my own opinions on things. I don't say anywhere that the 4k is a lesser mpc. I *do* say that the 5k *for me* does the job easier. But it makes me loose some features too as Glide clearly proofs. Most important for me is the Z8 sampler with all its bells and whistles.

"Free" is a discutable word here. If I got the hours payed that I spended on the 5k I could buy a few...

As a matter of fact, since Akai is planning a bugfix update for the 4k it could well be that I keep it in the end. Maybe sync it to the 5k and have 192 voices 8)

The 4k and 5k are not comparable that much. The 4k was probably also aimed at a different market than the 5k.

128 voice is a very logical sugestion imo

say you have 4 layers per pad, say each layer is sterio .. so that one pad uses 8voices of poly

so say you´ve made a layerd kit w snare hihat cymb kick sub kicks percussion ect each with sterio 4layers say 5pads hit at the same time thats 40 voices!.. and we are only talking a basic beat here

some of us do more that just assign a snare to a pad, 64 voices is sufficient 128 is pro!

aslo while Im at it ... on the hardwhere side please add a dedicated Track Up/Down and Mute / Solo buttons on the unit ... I mean comon Akai these buttons are used way to much to be just softbuttons under the screen (wich could be used for something elese instead)

also important creatif feature would be to have Time resulution 8th 16th 32th hardwhere buttons so the user could in realtime change the speed of the roll live ... another way to play your mpc... hope Akai will make it possible to assign that to a q link in the future...

anyway.. I will not let go of my 4k its to much of a workhorse in the studio... I might get a 5k to go with it though.. but letting go of the 4k ...nhaa... never!!!

AKAI Beta Tester: PLEASE check the JJ OS 2 about the best functions of the MPC 2500 and let it build in to the 5000:

-Pattern Mode ==>> the most important and powerfull function!!
-new Main Screen
-ADSR Pitch/Filter/Amp
-Real Time Pitch Shift
-Pad Copy
-all functions in real-time, without "stop" for a menu change
etc..

That is what we need for a "most advanced MPC on the planet".

This is the chance for Akai for an ultimate production tool.

Thanks for your input heimelektronik.

Unfortunately there is a whole not so nice story behind Akai versus JJ which makes Akai not really wanting to implement JJ features.
Besides, Akai can think for themselves when it comes to features they want to put in their MPCs or not.
Maybe that story should be brought to this forum one time to explain and show that there is much more than a machine and it's features. Maybe not for the users, but certainly for the people involved (i.e. Akai). A story about lies, crimes, rip-offs, etc. so people will understand a little better that today's Akai got stuck with a legacy they didn't want and they couldn't prevent when taking over the old Akai.

I'd say if you want a machine with the features described above then why not buy an Akai MPC 2500 with that non Akai OS on it? (serious question).

Hi Boele,

i know what you mean but is it a david and goliath game? akai is a big player and jj is a one man show. i am not an insider - i am a musician and mpc user since 1996 with the 3000. i hate akai for the product politic with the 3000 - never came out an update with cool features - they had trouble with roger linn in the early days........that is a joke for users or not or is it the capitalism way?

Back to the 5000: I like the design, the build in synth with the new features. But the simplest features how "Pattern Mode" (hit Pad and you have a 16stepmodus like the classic drum machines" is a MUST for an new MPC.

And the commercials on AKAIs website says "most advanced MPC on the planet". Is it really without simpliest details?

I will checking the 5000 after releasing in germany and íf it not a workhorse with a nice workflow and sound i will going back to a MPC 2500 for a cheap deal - the prices are down now, cool for users.......

regards (and sorry for my bad english style).

Scd...regardless of how Akai feel about the sneaky things JJ did....the truth is that his ideas were not necessarily his own. Most of the features he added were being written about in these forums for years before his OS was released. So Akai would actually be listening to actual users. There have been several feature request threads in the MPC 2500 forum that outlines great features that would continue to make the MPC the #1 drum sampler/sequencer on the market.

Actually I hate gossip. There is a lot of untrue "info" on this forum on this subject.

view on the whole jj thing and "wakai"...
