I need help with my chops

how do I separate/cut out/minimize other sounds when say chopping a bass loop from a record??? And the bass loop is just an example, I can't figure out how to separate any sound from another so at the minute all I'm able to do is sample the intro/outro on a record.

I've read thru the sampling basics pt. 1-3 on the link provided (big up clint)
and it doesn't mention a technique for this particular problem (or maybe it does but not in a language I understand?). I've been playing about with a sample with drums, bass and a stringed instrument with the intention of isolating the stringed instrument. Using the EQ effect I tried to cut out the lows (which I thought would reduce the bass) and the highs (put hi freq to 8000) but the sound didn't alter much at all.

I know you want us noobies to pay dues and put in work, which i totally understand, I just need someone to lemme know if I'm barking up the right tree or not. if I am, great, I'll keep experimenting but if not I can focus my efforts on this new elusive technique.

you cannot magically get rid of instruments.

you have to find a sample with the instrument plays solo.


you may be able to approximate the removal of an instrument with creative use of high pass or low pass filters.

That's all I wanted to know.

The reason i ask is because when i listen to a sample posted up for a battle then listen to the flips. I can hear certain parts of the sample which weren't solos and that's why I assumed it must be possible. Obviously the dude flippin' it knew what he was doing too, but we all gotta start somewhere no???

also listen to the sample in headphones, and try to see if there are different things going on, in the different speakers.


for instance; maybe piano and bass are on the right side, and maybe guitar and drums might be on the left side.

remember: you CAN'T isolate or filter instruments, you CAN only filter frequencies.
