Battery 3 to MPC

Haven't been around in like over a year, but finally getting back into music. I was hoping someone could help me with two quick question:

1) Has anyone come up with a way to convert Battery 3 files into something the MPC1K can read?
I want to build a couple of battery kits in the MPC so I can get away from the computer. I'm on a mac.

2) What is the best mac program these days for building mpc kits? I need to layer 4 samples per pad with different velocity sensitivities, assuming I can get those Battery sounds into the MPC without having to sample each and every one.

I think I tried this before and discovered that battery uses multi samples. that's about as far as I got with it, unless you wanna sample every single sound... much easier to midi up MPC to battery imo

Yeah. Last time I looked into this it didn't look possible (but will check that program mentioned). 

I'd really like to get at least two decent kits (jazz kit and funk kit) into the MPC. The reason is that I've started playing guitar again after putting it down like a decade ago, and I want to program some drums to play along to.  The beauty of playing guitar is that you just have to turn on the amp and you are ready to go. I hate booting up my computer, software, and messing with loads of cables, equipment if I just want to play for like 15 or 20 minutes. 

Plus my amp has a line in and a headphone jack so I could just throw on the headphones and a drum beat and mess around late at night. I think it would also help me to compose better drum beats if I were using the MPC like this on a regular basis. Hell, if I get some ryhthms I like I might even sample some rhodes and organ off of Komplete and work on some full tracks outside of the PC.   The simpler the set up the better. 

I hear you on that booting up everything for few minutes of fun, this is why I decided against gear lusting, cuz shit became a turn off whenever I wanted to make some beats...if you just trying to use battery's drums to jam along with your guitar. I think miding up mpc to battery would be fastest and least painful way.

I dont know, it says that battery 3 samples are wav files with a bitrate of 2116kbps and a standard wav file is 1411kbps.

maybe there is a converter that will simply convert an entire folder of sounds automatically

Thanks guys. I'll take a look. It would be great if I could convert those files. Would save loads of time. It'll be my project for the weekend.

I've set up several MPC versions of Battery 3 kits. It has been a slow and tedious process, but they are kits I have returned to frequently. Here's the steps I took to make it work:

-Find the folder with the Wav samples of the kit you want to transfer

-pick four samples for each drum sound that are spread across its dynamic range (ie. Snr01, Snr05, Snr 10, Snr15 if there are 15 layers to the Snr multisample available)

-create a clearly labled folder with your selections for one kit

-on a mac, use automator to import these into iTunes, making sure your import settings indicate the format the MPC likes (Wav, 44.1khz, 16bit, mono or stereo optional)

-go into your recently added folder in iTunes and apply an artist name and album to these files. I suggest Battery 3 as the artist and the name of the kit as the album

-Make sure non of the sample names are longer than 16 characters. Find ways of shortening them that leaves some descriptive element and the # of sample layer. Also, be absolutely sure you are consistent with the re-naming of each sample group. You may want to use automator again for a find and replace renaming thing.

-now you can use MPC maid to create a kit you will then load onto the sampler or you can...

-mount the MPC harddrive on the computer desktop and create a folder on the MAC HD with the name of the kit.

-Transfer your converted wav files into this kit folder.

-unmount the MPC and go into the program/sample screen where you will build your multisample kit

-for each pad set up you velocity switching thresholds and stack your multisamples accordingly. This should look something like

SnrL15 90-127
SnrL10 60-89
SnrL5 30-59
SnrL1 0-29

-Do this for each item in the kit, and voila! several hours later, you have a great velocity switching multisampled acoustic style drum kit


You don't necessarily NEED the multisample layers, especially if it's not the acoustic style kits you're after. If you don't care about the subtle dynamism of the velo-switching layers, you can just grab the loudest sample of each of a kit's drum voicings.

yeah man, just grab the best one... or sample the hit from battery onto the mpc. it is faster....

Thanks for the detailed run through! I will give it a go, although I've never used automator before so I'm not quite sure how to use it.

I think I will make the first kit with four velocity layers, as I am going for a realistic acoustic drum sound. Even if I only get one kit in there for now it will be great to mess around with.

yeah, automator pretty much just allows you to apply a process (such as import to iTunes) to a bunch of files all in one go. Pretty straight forward.

you could:

convert entire folders of samples with wavosaur to the correct bit depth and sample rate.

create a collection of pgms (with samples) using mpcmaid - it takes milliseconds to do loads of folders! they wont be in the same place as the battery samples in the kit, but every sample will be assigned to a pad.
